Saturday 6 October
10am - 12.30pm
Leader: Peter Guillary (English Heritage)
This walk anticipates the publication of Woolwich, the 48th volume of the Survey of London. Starting from Woolwich Arsenal station, it will take in the Woolwich Equitable Building Society's headquarters, Woolwich Polytechnic, the shops of Powis Street including the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society's stores, and two great cinemas of the late 1930s (Granada and Odeon), before turning to housing. The St Mary's Estate was London’s only post-war Comprehensive Development Area overseen by a borough, and in the early 1960s the Morris Walk Estate was a nationally important experiment in system building.
Cost: Members only £12
Meet: Outside Woolwich Arsenal station on the corner of Woolwich New Road and Vincent Road at 10am
