Early in the century, Selfridges pioneered American-style steel frame construction, creating a palatial presence in Oxford Street to match the ambitions of Gordon Selfridge. But as Professor Mica Nava, who presented the BBC4 programme Shopping for England will explain, his business was at least as significant in helping the liberation of women, mixing social classes and introducing a restaurant, library and other facilities to make the store a whole day outing.
The lecture will take place on Thursday 29th November at 6.30pm at The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1.
Members £8, non-members £10, students £5, including a glass of wine. Some tickets will be available at the door.
