A Coach Tour of Modernist Architecture and Design in Lancaster and Morecambe
Saturday 16th July 2016 10.30am to 5.30pm

Lancaster is predominantly Georgian and stone-built, whilst the neighbouring Victorian seaside resort of Morcambe boasts spectacular views over the Bay. Led by Aidan Turner-Bishop and Matthew Schofield of the North West Group, this will be a day trip to visit the surprisingly rich bits of modern architecture and design to be found there. We will start at the splendid Grade II* listed Midland Hotel, Morecambe by Oliver Hill- one of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in England, with decorations by Gill and Ravilious. For a wander round its elegant interiors.

In Lancaster we plan to visit the innovative University Chaplaincy building, Roger Booth’s County College buildings and the little gem that is the Ruskin Library. Also, the 1960s Pop Architecture of the Library and Chapel at the former St Martin’s College and Tom Mellor’s St Bernardette’s church with its arresting full-height semi-abstract reredos by John Piper. Then we’re off to the Westfield War Memorial Village, built as ‘homes fit for heroes’ for returning soldiers after World War One complete with a moving war memorial centre piece.

We start outside Lancaster Railway Station at 10:30 and hope to return there at 17:30. The 07:30 Virgin Penolino from Euston arrives at Lancaster at 09:55and the 17:38 arrives at Euston at 20:19. From Manchester Piccadilly, the train departs at 09:16 to arrive at 10:14. However, you could also make a weekend of it and stay at the Midland Hotel (minimum of two nights required) or venture up to the South Lake District, within easy reach of Morecambe.
