Muslim Architecture in Modern Britain Saturday 25th March 2017  FULLY BOOKED

Islamic culture has made a deep and enduring impact on the modern British landscape; from Regency Orientalism to the emergence of an authentic muslim architecture in the twentieth century. This tour will be the first event organised by the C20Soc that focuses exclusively on architecture built by or adapted for the muslim community. Highlights of the tour will include sites never before visited by the Society, such as Britain's first purpose-built Islamic place of worship, the extraordinary Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking; the Fazl Mosque, Southfields (1924-26) where Modernism meets Mughal architecture and the Grade II listed 1917 Muslim Burial Ground at Brookwood Cemetery. The tour will also feature re-purposed buildings such as the Ramadan-i-Serif Mosque, a former synagogue designed in 1903 by Lewis Solomon and the Islamic Centre of England - a Grade II listed converted Art Deco cinema. Among better-known sites, we will be visiting Hugh Casson's celebrated Ismaili Centre in South Kensington, completed in 1985 and Frederick Gibberd's brutalist tour-de-force, Regent's Park Mosque (1977). The event will be led by the architect and historian Shahed Saleem, author of the forthcoming book, The British mosque: an architectural and social history published by Historic England.

This tour is by coach and we shall have access to many of the mosques that are being visited.

We will meet at 9.30 at Woking Mosque which is a 10-15 minute walk from the station and the tour will end at Highbury and Islington tube station at 5.30. Lunch will be provided and is included in the cost.

Members £45.00   Non Members £50.00
